This is the week of answering questions I guess and I’m loving it! (Keep ’em coming!)
A few weeks ago, my friend Torrey asked me about where she could go to sell some of her designer handbags she no longer wanted. She told me she felt like many of the consignment shops she had been to didn’t really give her a great deal on her stuff – especially luxury items. I told her that had been my experience too!
So, I thought for a bit and I had a few suggestions.
Tradesy is a website and app that’s a lot like Poshmark, but with higher end items. I personally get really frustrated selling on Poshmark because people want to pay me $20 for something that’s listed at over $100. No – not happening. Tradesy is also easier as a seller because you have the option to use a shipping kit so you don’t have to find a box or bag to package your item in when you sell it – they provide everything for you!
I once sold an item on Tradesy and the buyer reported the item as “not as described.” (of course it was exactly as described!) So, it was sent back to Tradesy and they made the final decision – thankfully in my favor! But – keep in mind that is the risk when you sell through a site like this.
As a buyer, I like Tradesy too! I feel like the listings are more legitimate. I got a great winter coat on here one year that I still love.
I feel like this is such a given. I have never bought or sold luxury goods on Ebay, but I do know plenty of people who have. I feel like it’s kind of risky because you don’t really know how to verify if it’s authentic, but Ebay has a money back guarantee, so if it’s not the item the seller described, you can get your money back.
Good news for sellers – you’re protected too. I can’t speak from experience about any kinds of disputes, but seems like you’d be pretty safe either way on Ebay.
Online Consignment Stores
I have heard a lot about various secondhand websites where you can buy or sell designer goods, but I had never tried one myself. So, I decided why not? I heard about The RealReal several months ago and for whatever reason the name stuck in my head so I checked it out.
I am a little more budget-conscious when it comes to handbags and “it” bags aren’t really my thing. However, I had been searching for a new “grown up” looking bag, and had been eyeing a few satchels from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. I more or less knew what I was looking for: black, simple, little edgy, satchel or tote style.
I put my requirements into the search and voila! A bunch of beautiful bags appeared! I didn’t want to spend more than $200 so I adjusted the price and found this Rebecca Minkoff beauty! (It’s still available in the tan color btw!)
Overall, I was very impressed with the quality, and I’m really glad I didn’t pay full price since it’s basically like new. Also – if you’re a designer handbag fanatic – this is a great place to find rare pieces and sold out styles!
If you want to consign with The RealReal, it looks like you have a couple of options – you can send your items in with a pre-paid label or there is in-home pickup for certain areas. I don’t know much about consigning with them, but it seems like you’d get a better deal than some of the local places I’ve been into, so it’s worth checking out for sure!
EDIT: Another website that was recommended to me by another fashion blogger is Fashionphile! Let me know if you try it out!
So there ya have it! I got to show off my new bag and hopefully you got some ideas for where to purchase or consign some high-end goods! If y’all have any other questions you’d like to see answered on the blog, feel free to comment on any of my posts or you can message me on Instagram!
