Need some fashion and beauty hacks in your life? Me too!
Bloggers have some of the best advice when it comes to fashion and beauty, so earlier this year I interviewed a bunch of my favorite bloggers for a new series here on My Boring Closet. The series is called “Bloggers Overshare” and I’ll be debuting a new topic from the interviews at least once a month.
For today’s post, I asked, “What is your weirdest fashion or beauty hack?” The answers are hilarious and very helpful! I’ve sorted the fashion and beauty hacks by category so you can easily find what you’re looking for. To see more, be sure to check out each blogger’s website!
Nicholle, Topknots and Pearls: Hairspray is the best static electricity cutter, if you will. When your skirt or dress, or even your blouse, is clinging in all the wrong places, spray hairspray in between your skin and the clothing! (thanks mom!)
Leah, Eat Pray Wear Love: Fashion tape! I love swimsuits or evening gowns with plunging necklines, so fashion tape is essential to keeping everything in tack.
Alice, Lone Star Looking Glass: Hmmm right now it’s probably using a rubber band to keep my jeans up! By the time you share this, I will have just had my baby girl. Rubber bands are a lifesaver for getting back into your favorite blue jeans sooner, post pregnancy!
Kris, With Love from Kris: Wearing tops backwards if I want to to look diff. Example: I like the button on the back vs the crew neck in the front so I wear the button side up front and I have a whole new shirt!
Dana, Pink Champagne Problems: I don’t think this is weird, but when in doubt, I always go for the “half-tuck.” It just makes a boring outfit a bit more sleek and fashion forward.
Channing, Blue Mountain Belle: This isn’t really a hack, but I could not live with out petals!
Jessica, My Style Vita: Back in college I used to sell shoes at Nordstrom and there’s one shoe fit hack I learned that I swear by. If your shoe is a touch too big and your heel slips out, put a foot pad (I really like Footpetals since they’re thin and also comfortable) in the FRONT of your shoe. It pushes your foot back, versus forward. If you push your foot forward, you’ll have cramped toes, and guess what, your foot will likely still slip out of the shoe. It’s life changing, and it helped me sell a lot more shoes!
Sushmitha, Miss Minus Sized: Using double-ply toilet paper instead of boob tape. (I know, so weird, but it totally works for me!)
Shelbi, It’s All Chic to Me: Not sure if this qualifies but it’s a total life saver for photo shoots. If you get deodorant on your clothing, simply take a clean sock and rub it against your clothing. It will come right off!
Lacey, The Glitter Gospel: Vaseline around the spaces on your feet that your heels will rub! Magic I tell ya!
Ashley, Dressed to Kill: Always carry binder clips or clamps with you. I use these on a daily basis for styling commercials and definitely use them for myself if I need a garment to fit better.
Sarah, Sassy Red Lipstick: Wear thick socks with Louboutins around my house to stretch them out… and pulling out the blow dryer to add some heat to help mold them into a larger size.
Nina, Law of Fashion Blog: So embarrassing, sometimes if I’m shooting a look and the jeans are too big on me for the shot, I’ll use binder clips to make them look more like skinny jeans on me! LOL
Carolina, CHIC TALK: I wash my delicate clothes with baby shampoo to keep them soft!
Cathy, Poor Little It Girl: Hmm…I have a toothbrush that is specifically for exfoliating my lips…is that weird?
Heather, My Life Well Loved: When I run out of shave gel, I use conditioner instead.
Adriana, Daily Dose of Design: I actually did a post on a super weird but insanely helpful beauty hack… I was so sick of spending money on new tweezers when mine would get dull, and I figured out an easy way to sharpen your tweezers and make them like new!
Bethanie, The Garcia Diaries: If I have a zit, I put toothpaste on it overnight and when I wake up, it’s gone!
Meghan, I’m Fixin’ To: It’s not really a hack, but I swear by Nivea cream. It is a great dupe for La Mer’s cream at a huge fraction of the cost!
SJ, FASHinNY: Beauty has got to be freezing aquaphor on q-tips. It works wonders for under eye bags.
Sydney, Styled By S: When the time comes around and you get a pimple, the best thing is to put polysporin on it. I do this rather than acne treatments or cleansers because the polysporin will 1. kill the bacteria 2. take the redness away and 3. it acts fast! Another tip would be to take Advil liquid gels, poke a hole, and squeeze the gel on the pimple!
Sher, Sher She Goes: Not a hack per se but I swear by glycolic pads! They look and feel like they don’t do anything but the slight acidity keeps your pores super clear and your skin glowing! Bye bye acne.
Hoang-Kim, Color & Chic: Coconut oil! I go to sleep feeling like a wet noodle, but wake up with baby soft skin.
Katie, allGLAMMEDup: Cut off a piece from my aloe plant from the backyard and use the juice as acne “medication.” It works so well!
Bertha, Chic in Academia: Hair bleach for the face! Easier and less painful than waxing!
Beauty & Makeup Hacks
Hollie, Fashions of Fancy: A toothbrush to comb your eyebrows. I did the for the longest time until I finally switched to a spoolie wand. haha! (p.s. it was only used for my eyebrows)
Kelsey, Blondes & Bagels: I love to contour my chest. I know that seems weird, but for some reason I love a good defined collar bone. I like to use a buffing brush and shade the sides of my neck, around my collar bone, and sometimes in the valley of my boobs. I swear this instantly makes me look five pounds thinner.
Alexandra, i’m a little: If I have to go out but don’t want to wear makeup I apply a bit of petroleum jelly (Vaseline) on my lips, eyelashes, cheekbones and eyelids. It makes a brilliant highlighter and gives the most subtle sheen.
Adriana, Leopard Martini: Pinching my cheeks when I run out of blush so it looks like I have some on!
Rachel, Simply Poised Fashion: clear mascara for your eyebrows!
Hayley, Styled and Taylored: Mouthwashing with peroxide for whiter teeth.
Lily, With Love Lily Rose: Hmm, ‘baking‘ the under eye areas to keep the makeup set. It may not be weird, but I try to avoid human contact while it’s baking. I discovered it during a week of my grandma’s funeral, I needed a way for my makeup to stay even when I cried 🙁
Jaime, The Real Fashionista: Castor oil on my eyebrows! Thick eyebrows are “in” now apparently
Krista, The Hundred Blog: Coconut oil pulling for whiter teeth! I swear it works!
Emma, With A City Dream: I put toner in my foundation to make it glowey
Laura, Walking In Memphis In High Heels: The half wash on the front part of my hair so that I was able to go a week without washing my hair. Don’t judge me!
Brittani, By Brittani Lauren: I’m not sure if this qualifies as weird, but whenever I deep condition my hair, I don’t follow the instructions and put the deep conditioner on while in the shower with wet hair. I put it on dry hair instead and found it works so much better that way!
Rach, RD’s Obsessions: Using straight up coconut oil and rubbing it all over my hair has a hair treatment regime.
Kari, Sophisticated Whimsy: It’s not super exciting, but dry shampoo is my life saver! I’m a firm believer in only washing your hair 2 times per week for overall hair health, and dry shampoo is the only way I can achieve that. (Batiste for brunettes is my faaavorite!)
Julien, It’s Julien: Dry shampoo! I only wash and style my hair a couple times a week – then I’m living on dry shampoo the other days. SO EASY.
