When I was fifteen years old, I started working out. I was always a dancer, so I got plenty of physical activity, but around that time in my life being in high school, I felt like I wanted to start working on my body and building a little muscle. My mom had those workout tapes “The Firm,” and so I started doing those in our living room. They were super 80s and kind of hilarious, but that was the point when fitness really became a big part of my life.
Throughout my fitness journey, I have tried nearly everything: classes, gym, running, outdoor activities, you name it! (oh and I still like living room workout videos too from time to time) The one thing I have noticed is that it doesn’t matter so much what you’re doing, but rather your commitment to it. Sometimes, getting your mind right is the hardest part!
So, I have come up with a few tips to help you motivate yourself to work out even when it’s the absolute last thing you want to do.
1. Plan out your workout schedule for the week (and stick to it!).
If you’re busy like me, you have to find a way to get that workout in. For me, that means taking 6am classes a few days a week or skipping a happy hour with friends to head to the gym instead. Sometimes, I even use my lunch break at work to get in a quick run. The point is, if you know your schedule in advance and plan on sticking to it, it will make it a lot easier to say no when temptation arises! After all, you’re making plans with yourself and you hate being cancelled on, right??
2. Get yourself a kick-ass workout playlist.
For me, music is everything. I have to have music when I work out. It is such great motivation! Check out my workout playlist for ideas. Spotify also has a great “workout” section with fun playlists. Fit Radio App is another one of my favorites! I recently got these new headphones as a gift from Sudio and they are great quality! I always just used the headphones that came with my iPhone but these are great. And they stay in my ears, which is so hard to find for some reason! Oh and they’re rose gold. Enough said. Use code “MyBoringCloset” for 15% off!
3. Keep your goals in mind.
Why do you want to work out in the first place? Preparing for an event? Want to be stronger, faster? Training for a race?Don’t lose sight of your goals. Know that you CAN do it and push yourself to be the best version of yourself you can be. It’s hard but it’s worth it!
4. Enlist the help of a friend.
This totally goes along with tip #1. I love planning to go to different fitness classes or plan on a run in the park with my boyfriend or one of my friends. We hold each other accountable because we don’t want to flake on each other either.
5. Get fitness gear you love.
It may sound silly, but having cute workout clothes can be such a huge motivator! Mainly because you actually want to put them on, which sometimes is half the battle, right? These leggings from Albion are so soft I swear you could sleep in them! Actually sleeping in your workout clothes is a good idea too, then all you have to do is wake up and roll out of bed!
You’ve got this, babe!!
